After a spirited morning bout with the Mississauga Rebels where they fell just short, the Toronto Young Nationals came back with plenty of jump in their step for their second game of the day.
Brandon Coe netted the game winner with 1:22 left in the second period and Zach Roy made some big saves down the stretch as the Nats edged Elite Hockey Group 4-3.
“We knew how important this game was for us,” said Coe. “You don’t want to start the OHL Cup with two losses and I think we did what it took to make sure we got the win in this one.”
The victory wasn’t without its blemishes as the Nats saw a 3-1 lead evaporate in the second period as Elite Hockey Group drew the score even at three.
Coe’s game winner came on an assist from fellow Ajax native and childhood friend Ethan Keppen who registered three helpers in the game.
Michael Palandra, Brendan Bowie and Bradley Somers also had goals for the Nationals. Matthew Crasa and Gabriel Malek tallied for EHG before Dalton Duhart put home his OHL Cup-leading fourth goal of the showcase.
Both the Nationals and Elite Hockey Group wrap up Wednesday with 1-1 records.
