Wings edge Senators to climb in tight Subban Division

Christian Lepone scored the deciding goal with five minutes remaining in the third period as the Toronto Red Wings edged the Mississauga Senators 3-1 to gain ground in a tight Subban Division.

Barrett Hayton had a goal and an assist, striking on a first period powerplay to help the Red Wings pick up an important two points against a Senators team whose tight defensive system frustrated the York Simcoe Express in a 2-2 tie on Thursday.

“They do try and take away the neutral zone, but scoring two powerplay goals helped us get past that,” said Hayton. “We came in here today knowing exactly what we needed to do to make it into the quarter-finals and that’s win both games and score as much as we can. We need to follow up this win with another later today.”

Jack Watson was stellar in goal for the Red Wings while Adam Trotman also found the back of the net.

Thomas McKeown scored Mississauga’s lone goal as the Senators were eliminated from quarter-final contention with a 1-2-1 record.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:
Toronto – Barrett Hayton (1G, 1A)
Mississauga – Alexis Gravel (G)
