Play-In Day: Meet the Wild Card Teams

 

With five years of Wild Card action at the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour behind us, eight more teams have a chance to gain entry into the annual showcase with a win.

Five teams will advance, with four punching their ticket on Tuesday. The four teams that lose their first Wild Card Play-In Game will have a shot at redemption, squaring off on Tuesday evening before the fifth and final Wild Card spot will be settled between the two winners first thing Wednesday morning.

It’s been a long season and these eight teams have battled hard to get this far. Here’s a look at this year’s Wild Card competitors.

 

Wild Card Play-In Game #1 – 10:00am
North Central Predators (OMHA ETA) vs. Mississauga Senators (GTHL)

North Central Predators
Regular season: 21-8-5, 1st OMHA ETA West
Qualified: OHL Cup Selection Committee
Players to Watch: Ethan Larmand (F), Cole Patey (F), Connor Punnett (D)
Notable Alumni: Aidan Dudas (Owen Sound Attack), Luke Richardson (Kitchener Rangers), Patrick Brown (North Bay Battalion)

Mississauga Senators
Regular season: 
9-14-10, 6th GTHL
Qualified: Defeated Vaughan Kings in GTHL Wild Card Series 5-3 pts.
Players to Watch: Braeden Kressler (F), James Norton (G), Ethan Esposito (F)
Notable Alumni: Curtis Douglas (Windsor Spitfires), Nick Wong (Kingston Frontenacs), Jordan Frasca (Windsor Spitfires)

Winner to compete in Nash Division with Detroit Little Caesars, Don Mills Flyers, Windsor Jr. Spitfires and York-Simcoe Express.

Wild Card Play-In Game #2 – 11:30am
North York Rangers (GTHL) vs. Niagara North Stars (OMHA SCTA)

North York Rangers
Qualified: OHL Cup Selection Committee
Players to Watch: Logan Dittenhafer (D), Patrick Saini (F), Bryce Richardson (F)
Notable Alumni: Ben Garagan (Windsor Spitfires)

Niagara North Stars
Regular season:
 20-6-6, 2nd OMHA SCTA
Qualified: Defeated Southern Tier Admirals in SCTA Wild Card Play-In Game
Players to Watch: Parker Hendsbee (F), Matteo Giampa (F), Liam Shwedyk (F)
Notable Alumni: Adam McMaster (Owen Sound Attack), Hunter Holmes (Flint Firebirds), Riley McCourt (Flint Firebirds)

Winner to compete in Subban Division with Brantford 99ers, Halton Hurricanes, TPH Hockey and Toronto Nationals.

Wild Card Play-In Game #3 – 1:00pm
London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE) vs. Guelph Gryphons (OMHA SCTA)

London Jr. Knights
Regular season: 20-8-5, 4th ALLIANCE
Qualified: OHL Cup Selection Committee

Guelph Gryphons
Regular season:

Qualified: Fifth Place at OMHA Championship

Winner to compete in Shanahan Division with Quinte Red Devils, Thunder Bay Kings, Toronto Marlboros and fifth Wild Card team.

Wild Card Play-In Game #4 – 2:30pm
Waterloo Wolves (ALLIANCE) vs. Mississauga Rebels (GTHL)

Waterloo Wolves
Regular season: 20-8-5, 2nd ALLIANCE
Qualified: Defeated London Jr. Knights in ALLIANCE Wild Card Series 4-0 pts.
Players to Watch: Cooper Way (F), Owen Parsons (F), Kyle Maloney (F)
Notable Alumni: Nate Schnarr (Guelph Storm), Mitchell Hoelscher (Ottawa 67’s), Keean Washkurak (Mississauga Steelheads)

Mississauga Rebels
Regular season: 
19-12-2, 5th GTHL
Qualified: Defeated North York Rangers in GTHL Wild Card Series 6-2 pts.
Players to Watch: Max Donohoe (F), Jesse Fishman (F), Justin Wu (G)
Notable Alumni: Riley Damiani (Kitchener Rangers), Philip Tomasino (Niagara IceDogs), Zach Gallant (Peterborough Petes)

Winner to compete in Lindros Division with Kitchener Jr. Rangers, Team NOHA, Toronto Red Wings and Whitby Wildcats.

 

The four losing teams will play a semi-final on Tuesday evening at Scotiabank Pond.

The losing team from WC 1 and losing team from WC 2 will play on Scotiabank #3 at 7:25 pm
The losing team from WC 3 and losing team from WC 4 will play on Scotiabank #4 at 7:25 pm

The two winning teams from these Consolation semi-finals will play Wednesday at Scotiabank Pond #1 at 7:30 am.
