The Toronto Marlboros scored early and often, taking a 4-0 lead after one period to eventually defeat the Southern Tier Admirals 5-1 to open the 2016 OHL Cup.
Liam Buckley connected with Yianni Tsiampas and Graeme Clarke just 1:38 into action before Akil Thomas, Danil Antropov and Clarke followed with goals of their own to put the Marlies in the driver’s seat.
Antropov would add his second of the night in the third period while the Admirals had a goal from Quinton Fox before all was said and done.
“There’s been a lot of anticipation leading into this game,” said Marlies forward Akil Thomas. “We won our series with the Jr. Canadiens on Tuesday and ever since we’ve had our sights set on this. I think it showed by the goals we got in the opening minutes.”
Thomas was named Toronto’s MVP in the victory, scoring once while adding two assists.
“We’ve all seen the photos and heard about the accomplishments of past Marlies teams,” Thomas continued. “Several of us were at the OHL Cup Championship game last year, so we know what this is all about. It’s a privilege to be a part of such a successful organization.”
The Marlies enter the 2016 OHL Cup in the hunt for their third straight championship, a quest they’ll continue on Wednesday when they take on the Quinte Red Devils.
