The Toronto Marlboros entered the third period with a 1-0 lead but quickly pulled away as quick goals from Danil Antropov and Allan McShane opened the floodgates in a 6-0 victory.
The Marlies will play for their third straight OHL Cup title on Monday against the York Simcoe Express following a big finish to Saturday’s Semi-Final win over the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. The Marlies recently eliminated the Jr. Canadiens in a GTHL Semi-Final playoff series.
“We’ve become very familiar with them,” said Antropov who finished the night with a pair of goals. “We learned from our playoff series that if you get on their ‘D’ quick they’ll force it up the wall and that was our game plan. We wanted to pound away at them off the forecheck and wear them down and by the third period I think we had done that.”
Antropov finished the night with two goals and an assist while Akil Thomas led the Marlies with two goals and three assists. Goaltender Elliott Tang earned Player of the Game honours with the shutout.
With the win, the Marlies shift their attention to the York Simcoe Express, a team they’ve faced twice already this season.
“They’re a solid team as we’ve seen this week,” Antropov continued. “We’ve beaten them twice, but both games were tight. We’re all amped up to play on Sportsnet and show the province what we can do.”
The Toronto Jr. Canadiens finish their 2016 OHL Cup with a record of 4-2-0, being led in scoring by Quarter-Final overtime hero Kirill Nizhnikov who had eight points (3-5–8) in six games. Defenceman Dirk Stadig finished tied for the showcase lead in scoring among defencemen with five points (3-2–5) in six contests.
The Marlies square off with the OMHA Champion York Simcoe Express in the OHL Cup Championship on Monday at 7:00pm from the Mattamy Athletic Centre, a game that can be seen across the province on Sportsnet Ontario.
