The Toronto Marlboros have the wind at their backs, heading into Saturday’s quarter-final matchup against the Barrie Colts off a 6-2 win over the Sun County Panthers.
The Marlies finished with a perfect 4-0-0 round robin record as Will Cuylle (4, 5, 6) pulled into a tie for the tournament scoring lead while adding 10 shots on goal.
“We knew there wasn’t a lot on the line in this game, but we didn’t want to underestimate them and we wanted to play hard right from the start of the game,” said Cuylle. “This will help us be ready for tomorrow when it’s win or go home.”
Toronto scored five goals or more for the fourth straight game as Kallaway Mercer (2), Riley Piercey (4) and Stephen Halliday (5) also found the back of the net. Blueliner Lleyton Moore chipped in with three assists while goaltender Cole McWilliams made 18 saves.
The Marlboros outshot the Panthers 36-20 as Sun County had goals from Ryan Gagnier (1) and Zane Dalpe (2). John Ulicny (3-2–5) led the Panthers in round robin scoring.
The 2-2-0 Panthers have advanced to Saturday’s quarter-final where they’ll face the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (3-0-1).
The Marlboros wrap up the round robin leading all clubs with 22 goals. They feature seven different players with at least a point-per-game.
