Senators strike early, defeat Quinte 4-1

The Mississauga Senators scored three goals in the opening 10 minutes of action, cruising to a 4-1 win over the Quinte Red Devils in the third Wild Card Play-In Game at the 2018 OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour.

The Senators punched their ticket to the annual showcase for a third straight year as Elias Cohen (1) led the way with a goal and three assists while Braeden Kressler (1), Bryce Sutherland (1) and Sebastian Bulovs (1) also found the back of the net.

“We’ve worked all year for this,” said Cohen following his four-point effort. “They gave us a good battle today but I thought our team looked good right from the start of the game, and that’s important at an event like this. We really wanted this one.”

Mississauga went 2-for-5 on the power play and outshot Quinte 29-26. Sens netminder Alex Mbuyi made 25 saves to earn the win.

“We made the most of the scoring chances we had early in the game and that had a lot to do with the win,” Cohen continued. “I thought everybody played a part in the win though. I had a good game but it takes more than just one guy to win a hockey game.”

The Senators gained Wild Card status following a closely contested GTHL Wild Card Series victory over the Don Mills Flyers. Now they’ll advance to compete in the Shanahan Division alongside the York-Simcoe Express, cross-town rival Mississauga Reps as well as the TPH Thunder.

Jacob Vreugdenhil (1) scored Quinte’s lone marker on the power play with 5:41 remaining in the second period. The Red Devils see their OHL Cup quest come to an end and will miss out on the showcase for the first time since 2014.
